The Rise of Sustainable Fashion
In recent years, sustainable fashion has emerged as a pivotal trend in the industry. Consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental and social impacts of their clothing choices, leading to a surge in demand for environmentally conscious materials and ethical production practices. This shift is not just a fleeting trend but a fundamental change in how we approach fashion.
Eco-Friendly Materials and Ethical Production
Eco-friendly fashion focuses on using materials that have a minimal impact on the environment. Organic cotton, recycled materials, and plant-based fabrics are at the forefront of this movement. Brands are also prioritising ethical production practices, ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for their workers… which should be a no-brainer!!!
Circular Fashion: Thrifting and Resale Platforms
Circular fashion is a model that keeps clothing in use for as long as possible. This approach helps reduce waste and the need for new resources. Thrifting and resale platforms are essential components of circular fashion. Platforms like Depop and Vestiaire Collective have revolutionised the way we buy and sell secondhand clothes.
- Depop: This platform is a favourite of mine and among younger consumers looking for unique, vintage, and trendy secondhand pieces. It combines social media elements with e-commerce, making it easy to connect with sellers and discover new styles. You can find my Depop here.
- Vestiaire Collective: Aimed at luxury fashion enthusiasts, Vestiaire Collective offers a curated selection of pre-owned designer items. This platform ensures the authenticity and quality of the pieces, making it a reliable option for high-end sustainable shopping.
Australia’s Fashion Consumption
Australians have a well-documented love for fashion. In fact, they buy more clothes per capita than any other country in the world. While this passion for fashion drives the industry, it also raises concerns about overconsumption and waste.
Maximising Cost Per Wear
One way to combat overconsumption is by re-wearing pieces more often and finding versatile ways to style each item. Here are some tips to maximise cost per wear:
- Invest in Timeless Pieces: Choose high-quality items that can be styled in multiple ways and will last for years. Classic pieces like a timeless coat/outerwear piece, a little black dress, or a pair of quality jeans – pieces that never go out of style.
- Mix and Match: Create different looks by mixing and matching items in your wardrobe. A single piece can be transformed by pairing it with different colours (hello colour theory), various accessories, shoes, and layers.
- Accessorise Creatively: Accessories can change the entire look of an outfit. Jewellery, belts, and bags can add a fresh twist to your existing wardrobe.
- Layering: Especially useful in varying climates, layering can help you get more use out of your clothing. A summer dress can be worn in winter with the addition of tights, boots, and a cozy sweater.
Selling and Reinvesting – My favourite part of sustainable fashion!
Another effective way to maintain a sustainable wardrobe is by selling items you no longer wear. Platforms like Depop, Vestiaire Collective, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace, as well as local markets, are great places to sell your pre-loved clothing. Not only does this practice extend the life of your clothes, but it also allows you to earn money that can be reinvested into new, sustainable pieces. This approach supports a circular economy and helps reduce the demand for fast fashion. As a rule of thumb, consider adopting a “one in, one out” policy: for every new item you bring into your wardrobe, let go of one you no longer wear. This helps keep your wardrobe manageable and encourages thoughtful purchasing.
Preloved Markets:
Sydney – Kirribilli Markets
Melbourne – Camberwell Market & Bentleigh Sunday Market (for the local girls).

Sustainable fashion is not just a trend but a necessary evolution in the industry. By embracing environmentally conscious materials, ethical production practices, and circular fashion models, we can make a significant impact on the environment. Platforms like Depop and Vestiaire Collective make it easier than ever to participate in this movement.
For Australians and fashion enthusiasts worldwide, rethinking how we purchase, wear, and dispose of our clothes is crucial. By investing in timeless pieces, maximising cost per wear, and utilising secondhand options (both selling and buying), we can enjoy fashion responsibly and sustainably.
