Investing in quality knits means they’ll last longer—just make sure to care for them properly! Here are some tips to help you maintain the beauty and longevity of your knitwear.
Read the Care Label
Always check the care label on your knitwear for specific washing and drying instructions. Different materials may require different care.
Gentle Washing
Hand Wash: The safest option is hand washing your knits in cool water with a mild wool detergent. Gently swish the garment in the water without wringing or stretching.
Machine Wash: If the care label permits, use a delicate or wool cycle on your washing machine with cold water and a gentle detergent. Place the knitwear in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging or stretching.
Drying
Avoid the Dryer: Never tumble dry knitwear, as the heat can cause shrinking and damage.
Lay Flat to Dry: After washing, reshape the garment and lay it flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel with the knit inside to remove excess water, then lay it flat on a drying rack or another dry towel away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Storage
Fold, Don’t Hang: Always fold knitwear instead of hanging it. Hanging can cause the garment to stretch and lose its shape.
Clean Before Storing: Ensure your knitwear is clean before storing it away for the season. This helps prevent moths and other pests that are attracted to dirt and oils.
Use Cedar Balls or Lavender: Place cedar balls, lavender sachets, or moth-repellent products in your storage area to protect your knits from moths. I read that highly scented soap in your wardrobe is a good way to keep the fabric-eating insects away from your clothes – I have just started, so I will keep you posted on this!
De-Pilling
Remove Pills: Pills are those small balls of fibres that can form on the surface of knitwear. Use a fabric shaver to gently remove them. Avoid pulling them off by hand as this can damage the fabric.
Spot Cleaning
For small stains or spots, use a damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent to gently dab the area. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain and damage the fibres.
Avoid Excessive Washing
Knitwear doesn’t need to be washed after every wear. Often, airing out your knitwear is sufficient. Over-washing can cause the fibres to weaken and lose their shape.
By following these tips, you can keep your knitwear looking great, ensuring they remain a cosy and stylish part of your wardrobe for many seasons to come… keeping that cost per wear low!
